How To File a Claim If You Are Injured in a Lyft Accident

Lyft rideshares are convenient for anyone who does not own a car or cannot use public transportation. They can also provide safe late-night transit, but what happens when your Lyft car gets into an accident? Our friends at Hall-Justice explain a few things that will help when filing a personal injury claim involving your Lyft ride. These points will help ensure that you obtain the damages you deserve.

What Type of Coverage Is Available?

Lyft has the following rules for handling insurance payouts:

  • Accidents involving Lyft vehicles carrying passengers may qualify for coverage up to $1,000,000.00 for personal injuries and damaged property
  • Accidents involving drivers using the Lyft app but not carrying passengers may qualify for coverage for injuries and property damage up to a combined total of $100,000.00
  • Accidents involving Lyft vehicles and drivers who are off-duty are not covered, but drivers’ insurers may handle such claims

What are the Steps for Filing a Claim After a Lyft Accident?

Before leaving the accident scene, you or someone else must obtain the involved drivers’ insurance information, licenses, license plate numbers, and contact information. If possible, take pictures of the vehicle and other accident damage and statements from eyewitnesses. Police officers present can help collect testimonies. After gathering these details, remember to notify Lyft about the accident and submit the pictures.

As with any accident, your safety is paramount. Although you may not think you have a severe injury, it is always best to seek medical attention as soon as possible because some injury symptoms do not manifest until hours or days later. Therefore, do not hesitate to have a physical evaluation at a hospital or doctor’s office. Also, you must obtain medical care within two weeks of the accident to avoid reducing your claim’s potential value. Once you have medical details about your injuries, you can proceed with your claim.

Wait for The Insurer To Contact You

If your accident qualifies, Lyft will initiate your claim with its insurer and provide you with a reference number you can use to follow up with adjusters. Don’t be surprised if this process is slow and redundant. Insurers will usually do everything possible to minimize the damages they must pay and try to get you to accept their first offer by drawing out the process.
